With Mumbai Noise, Ben Gorham paints an intimate portrait of a city that is central to his identity - both in its sensuous richness and complex modernity. The mesmerizing density of the streets of Chembur - the smoky haze of incense and burning woods, interspersed with roadside coffee trucks and cacophonous soundscapes - is explored through a contemporary lens, paying tribute to both the city's cultural heritage and the evolution of its energy.

The concept of vibrant diversity is reflected in a fragrance brimming with contrasts: rich, warm woods and amber blend with clarity, plummy davana sits alongside leather, bitter coffee blends with sweet tonka beans. "An overabundance of sensory experiences is very characteristic of Mumbai - from the second you step off the plane you know you're somewhere else," says Gorham. "Mumbai Noise is about the overwhelming power of a place".

Gorham's nostalgia is complemented by a photo campaign by Ashish Shah documenting his vision of contemporary Mumbai - from the subcultural communities to the contemporary youth movements, the dreams and realities of a new generation.

"The western view of India is probably the same today as it was a century ago," says Gorham. "But Mumbai is a melting pot of modernity. Two perspectives collide through Mumbai Noise and Ashish's images."

Ben Gorham

Born in Sweden to an Indian mother and Canadian father, Ben grew up in Toronto, New York and Stockholm. He graduated from Stockholm Art School with a degree in Fine Arts, but a chance encounter with perfumer Pierre Wulff convinced him that he wanted to create fragrances rather than paintings. With no formal training in the field, Gorham, aged 31, sought the services of world-renowned perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette, explaining his olfactory desires to them and letting them create the compositions. As an outsider in the beauty industry, Ben is something of an anomaly and has been featured in several international magazines such as French Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, V Magazine and Fantastic Man to name a few for his personal style and connection to fashion and art , accepted.
